It is a long journey to Bangkok from Koh Phangan unless you take the expensive option of flying from Koh Samui to Bangkok. The good news is that the trip is cheap and straight forward. There are numerous travel agents selling joint tickets and there are numerous ferries and buses plying the route. The easiest method to get tickets is to click on the timetable table above and choose your date and time of travel and book online.

The big ferry companies all offer joint ferry and bus tickets. The fastest service is provided by Lomprayah. Their high speed catamaran saves about an hour in travel time. Seatran Discovery offers slightly cheaper tickets, as do Songserm. There is also Krungsiam Tour. They have new air-con buses. Travel time is 20 hours.

Generally speaking, you set off from your beach at about 10 am in the morning by taxi that you have to organize separately. Then you hang around at Thongsala Pier for an hour or so before boarding a boat. On the mainland you will be ushered to the correct bus. The bus journey is overnight. You arrive in Bangkok early evening. The drop off point is usually near Khao San Road. The bus stops a couple of times at motorway services (Thai style) where you can use the toilets, stretch your legs and get some food.

Slightly less painful but longer is the combined ferry+bus+train ticket. This ticket transfers you from Surat Thani to the train station. You have a choice of second class or first class sleeper. The train is pleasant. There is a buffet car. You can normally smoke and the bed is made for you by a porter if you choose second class. In first class you get your own cabin with a sink and power point. The problem with the train is that they are often late to start and late to arrive.

Be prepared for a long journey from Koh Phangan to Bangkok. It is worth bringing a blanket or sweater as it can get cold in the bus with the air-con permanently on. Also keep your valuables in your hand luggage, and keep your hand luggage with you at all times.
