Loi Lay Floating Bar is the only party boat on Koh Phangan. Well it might be an exaggeration to call it a boat – it is rather a float tied up to Baan Tai Pier – but it is on the water. And it is easily one of the best bars in Koh Phangan. Hundreds of people have now experienced a Loi Lay party and the overwhelming impression is that it is an awesome night out.
Since opening in 2012 Loi Lay Floating Bar has stuck the basics of house parties and booze. Over the years they have had some excellent house parties that have been graced by a few big name DJs as well as many cool underground spinners. They have a great range of cocktails and of course they will make any bucket combo that your addled imagination can come up with. They claim to do the best Mai Tai on the island.
The bar is attached to the pier. It is surprisingly large. It is mostly wooden in traditional Koh Phangan style with no walls and lots of low seating and hammocks around the edge of the boat. These are the best spots to chill and watch the spectacular sunset over the southern coast of Koh Phangan.
The centre of the bar is given over to the dance floor. Nicely, the DJ table is on the same level as the dance floor. It lends intimacy between those making the music and those enjoying it. And every Sunday they throw a party when lots of people are giving it lots of shapes and moves on the wooden boards. The Sunday party following a Saturday night Full Moon Party is often off the hook.
The atmosphere at the bar is great. The Westerners and the Thai staff and the regular DJs are all super friendly people. They love music and love partying. It is a great counter balance to the cynicism that often creeps into large revenue parties on the island. As a result the bar has numerous glowing reviews of people claiming the crew at Loi Lay are their new Thai family; that the drinks are great; and that the beats are sick.
The only bum note in the Trip Advisor reviews is mention of Thais trying to charge people to get on the pier to enter the bar. I don’t think that is the intention of the owners of the bar; rather a small opportunist crime.
So if you love house music and if you love small and intimate parties with a laid-back vibe then Loi Lay Floating Bar is the place to head on Sundays. You’ll experience what Koh Phangan should be about – great people and great times.
Loi Lay Floating Bar doesn’t maintain a website but it does have a very good Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/pages/Loi-Lay-Floating-Bar-Lounge/330483910307988). It showcases the good times and shows they interact through social media. Indeed it is one of the best Facebook pages about Koh Phangan. The photos used here are from their Facebook page. Phanganist also have been a decent video of the bar and its parties. The monks are there to bless the dance floor not to grace it.
