Sarah’s Sushi Restaurant is quickly building a reputation as one of the best Japanese restaurants on Koh Phangan. The restaurant specialises in freshly made sushi as well as other Japanese favourites. Sarah makes the sushi herself and leads a friendly team of staff. She also finds time to give lessons in sushi making.
It is always good to see different types of cuisine represented in Koh Phangan. Baan Tai and the rest of the island are awash with places competing to make the biggest, meatiest and most indulgent burger and fries. It would be a shame if Koh Phangan became like Benidorm with every pub serving English breakfast, pies and John Smith’s bitter. Part of the fun of being on holiday is having the chance to try new food. Sarah’s Sushi Restaurant gives you that chance.
The menu includes several types of sushi all made on the premises using fresh seafood and vegetables. The restaurant also uses the thick and short rice that is essential for Japanese cuisine. Other menu items include fried gyoza (fried Chinese dumplings stuffed with meat and chopped herbs and vegetables), miso soup and sashimi (raw fish).
You can get maki, philly rolls as well as other items such as Burmese salad and the Thai standard dessert of sticky rice and mango.
If you are Japanese or have lived in Japan then don’t expect the same levels of excellence as found in the land of the rising sun. However, I have to say this is one of the best sushi restaurants I have visited outside of Japan.
It is a small restaurant located on the main Thongsala to Haad Rin Road near Baan Tai pier. It is a small restaurant with tables and chairs and a large glass window giving you a view of passing traffic. It is a comfortable restaurant but without any real design theme.
The service is prompt and friendly. Sarah is very hands-on and happy to cook, serve and chat to customers. She also has day classes in making sushi. It should be mentioned that the food is made to order and so can take some time to appear on the table. This is not fast food. They have games to keep you entertained as well as cold beer, tea etc.
For me one of the attractions for Sarah’s Sushi Restaurant is the very fact that the food is not fast. It is made with care and fresh ingredients; eating here is more of an event than simply a place to fill up with protein and carbs before moving on to a boozy venue.
